Project Overview

The Mercantile Bar and Grill in downtown Worcester represents a significant chapter in the revitalization of the city's urban core. Renovated from one of the few remaining structures of the original Worcester Center Galleria mall as part of the City Square redevelopment, the two-level restaurant honors the history of its host building while embracing a contemporary hospitality identity.

Designed by Emporium Design of New York City, the 500-seat restaurant — complete with a rooftop deck bar — required lighting that could command architectural presence at the entrance while withstanding the demands of a high-traffic commercial environment. Belfer's MQ2502 Marquee Lighting was selected to deliver that presence beneath the entrance canopy.

Lighting Solution

The project features the Belfer MQ2502 Marquee Lighting, installed under the entrance canopy in black powder coat finish — chosen for its bold visual impact, durability, and compatibility with the building's renovated facade.
Fixture Specifications:
  • Model: MQ2502 2x2 Surface Mount Medium Base Marquee Lighting
  • Type: Linear surface-mounted marquee lighting fixture
  • Lamp Compatibility: Medium base sockets for incandescent or LED lamps
  • Lamp Spacing Options: 6" on center, 12" on center, or custom spacing
  • Construction: Extruded aluminum
  • Finish: Black powder coat
  • Mounting: Surface mounted under entrance canopy
  • Location Rating: UL and CUL Listed Wet Location
  • Applications: Restaurant and hospitality exteriors, retail storefronts, entertainment venues, architectural facades

The MQ2502 is ordered by the foot and available in straight or mitered cuts, allowing precise customization to the canopy configuration.

Design Intent

Emporium Design's vision for the Mercantile centered on a balance between historic character and modern energy. The entrance canopy serves as a critical first impression — a threshold that signals the warmth and vitality within.

The Belfer MQ2502 was selected to deliver a clean, high-contrast illumination along the underside of the canopy, creating a welcoming glow that reinforces the Mercantile's identity as a destination within Worcester's evolving downtown. The fixture's bold, evenly spaced lamp configuration echoes classic commercial architecture while providing the reliability expected of a contemporary hospitality project.

Installation Highlights

Installation was coordinated as part of the broader City Square construction timeline, with the MQ2502 fixtures integrated into the entrance canopy structure during the building's renovation phase. The fixture's extruded aluminum construction and wet location rating ensured suitability for the exterior canopy environment.

The built-to-length configuration allowed the lighting to span the full width of the canopy opening with precise fit and consistent lamp spacing, eliminating visible seams and maintaining a continuous line of illumination. The black powder coat finish was coordinated with the facade palette established by Emporium Design, ensuring cohesion between the fixture and the surrounding architectural surfaces.

Results

The completed installation gives The Mercantile Bar and Grill a distinctive and welcoming presence at street level. The MQ2502 fixtures deliver consistent, high-visibility illumination under the entrance canopy — establishing a clear architectural focal point that draws guests into the space and reinforces the Mercantile's identity within Worcester's City Square redevelopment.

The project demonstrates Belfer's ability to provide built-to-specification marquee lighting solutions that meet the demands of large-scale commercial hospitality environments, from design coordination through durable, long-term performance.

Lux Theatre Banff AB

Marquee Lighting at the theater at Lux Cinema in Baniff Canada

The opening of the Lux Theatre in May of 1913 marked the beginning of a new entertainment era in Banff. Constructed in the years before either radio or television was available, the theatre screened features, comedies and newsreels which would bring the world to this small mountain town. Patrons would enjoy musical productions while film reels were changed, courtesy of an early victrola machine that played vinyl records.

The Lux theatre is thought to be one of the first cinema houses in Alberta to screen movies with fully synchronized sound in 1930. The films incorporating synchronized dialogue were known as "talking pictures" or 'talkies'. Then came Technicolor, a trademark process known and celebrated for its hyper-realistic, saturated levels of color film. These innovations increased audiences for the movies and contributed to the sustained popularity of Banff's Lux Theatre.

Affectionately known as "The Lux", the existing local landmark opened in 1989 and has four separate theatres that provide daily screenings of popular new releases. The theatre also hosts feature evenings to showcase Canadian and foreign films, documentaries and special interest productions. The Lux remains a popular destination in Banff, especially for the Tuesday evening ticket deals and live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

C.L. Hoover Opera House

C.L. Hoover Opera House, Junction City, KS

The C.L. Hoover Opera House was originally constructed in 1882 through the initiative of local citizens who sought to bring cultural events only rarely encountered in the Midwest. The original theater included an orchestra level, a balcony, a gallery, and three levels of box seating for a total capacity of over 1000 seats. Lighting came from gas chandeliers. In 1890, the building underwent interior remodeling with electric lights installed. In 1919 the Opera House was remodeled again and productions included live theater as well as new motion picture “talkies”. In 1942, a full renovation transformed the Opera House into a modern movie theater, showing motion pictures until it closed in 1982.

The renovation and re-launch of the C.L. Hoover Opera House in 2008 filled the need in Junction City for a cultural venue in which to meet, hold events, and perform concerts and theatre. After a $7 Million restoration it is open again as a state-of-the-art performing arts and civic center. Today’s C.L. Hoover Opera House is a multi-use facility for performing & visual arts presentation, business & professional events, educational & cultural opportunities and civic activities.
