Belfer collaborated with the design team to create a lighting solution that balanced flattering facial illumination with durability and ease of maintenance, ensuring consistency across all backstage dressing environments.

Design Intent

The lighting concept honors the authenticity of traditional theatre dressing rooms while incorporating energy-efficient modern technology. Designers sought to evoke the warmth and familiarity of vintage backstage mirrors—creating spaces that feel personal, flattering, and inspiring.

The Belfer MQ2502 provides consistent vertical illumination across the face, reducing harsh shadows and enhancing visibility, while the protective guard detailing reinforces the functional craftsmanship of the fixture.

Installation Highlights

Installation occurred during the theatre’s interior restoration, with the MQ2502 fixtures mounted across and vertically on either side of individual dressing mirrors. Their flexibility in lamp selection allowed designers to tailor both brightness and color temperature for performer comfort.

Each fixture was custom made to size, ensuring the luminaires visually integrated into the space’s design language. Electrical connections were concealed for a clean, architectural presentation.

Results

The completed dressing rooms reflect a seamless marriage of form and function—delivering warm, flattering light that supports professional performance preparation. The Belfer MQ2502 fixtures elevate the backstage experience, bringing timeless theatre character into a modern production environment.

The project demonstrates Belfer’s commitment to quality illumination that supports the creative process behind the scenes.

C.L. Hoover Opera House

C.L. Hoover Opera House, Junction City, KS

The C.L. Hoover Opera House was originally constructed in 1882 through the initiative of local citizens who sought to bring cultural events only rarely encountered in the Midwest. The original theater included an orchestra level, a balcony, a gallery, and three levels of box seating for a total capacity of over 1000 seats. Lighting came from gas chandeliers. In 1890, the building underwent interior remodeling with electric lights installed. In 1919 the Opera House was remodeled again and productions included live theater as well as new motion picture “talkies”. In 1942, a full renovation transformed the Opera House into a modern movie theater, showing motion pictures until it closed in 1982.

The renovation and re-launch of the C.L. Hoover Opera House in 2008 filled the need in Junction City for a cultural venue in which to meet, hold events, and perform concerts and theatre. After a $7 Million restoration it is open again as a state-of-the-art performing arts and civic center. Today’s C.L. Hoover Opera House is a multi-use facility for performing & visual arts presentation, business & professional events, educational & cultural opportunities and civic activities.

Indiana University Dressing Rooms, Bloomington IN

Marquee Lighting with lamp guards in dressing room of university theater

Project Overview

Indiana University in Bloomington is nationally recognized for its commitment to the performing arts, live production, and academic excellence across theater, film, television, and concert performance. To support the demands of student performers, faculty, and visiting professionals, Belfer Lighting provided custom MQ2502 Marquee Lighting solutions for the university's theater dressing rooms, film and television makeup spaces, and concert performer prep spaces.

The challenge of any high-use backstage environment is straightforward — energy-efficient LED solutions with built-in safety and protection features are essential in spaces where the pace is relentless, the activity is constant, and the need for reliable, flattering illumination never stops. Belfer's MQ2502 Marquee Lighting system was designed precisely for this environment, delivering the performance professionals depend on while protecting the performers who rely on it.

Lighting Design Approach

Dressing rooms at a major performing arts university are among the most demanding lighting environments in any building. They must tame the chaos of dressing rooms filled to the brim with costumes and gadgets, accommodate multiple users simultaneously, and deliver accurate, shadow-free illumination for makeup application, costume fitting, and performance preparation — all without compromise on safety.

The MQ2502 energy-efficient LED system addresses every one of these demands. Permanently fixed lamp guards around each exposed lamp protect performers and crew from accidental contact with bulbs — a critical safety feature in fast-moving backstage areas where hanging costumes, props, and personal equipment create constant potential for impact. The result is a lighting environment that is as safe and organized as it is bright and flattering.
